While a student at the University he went on a blind date with Susan Phelps and in 1953 they were united in marriage. Jim came back to Roseburg to teach at Benson School for five years and then Fremont Junior High for 25 years. While a teacher he also coached football and track. On summer breaks he would drive truck and when he retired from the school system in 1990 he began the adventure of driving truck full time. Jim loved the outdoors, spending time up the North Umpqua camping, hunting deer and elk, and enjoying the woods. He was a member of the local Elks and Moose Lodges. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Deborah Ivie. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue; son Jim (Trina) of Roseburg; two grandson Danny (M’liss) of Roseburg and Travis of Florida; two great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Sage as well as a son-in-law Steve Ivie of Salem.
