James "Jim" Shrum Obituary

James ‘Jim’ Shrum, age 83, a native of Roseburg, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2016. He was born on July 16, 1932 to James and Bertha Shrum at the Old Mercy Hospital. Jim was a graduate of Roseburg High School and played football and ran track. After high school he attended Southern Oregon University and in 1960 received a degree in Education. While a student at the University he went on a blind date with Susan Phelps and in 1953 they were united in marriage. Jim came back to Roseburg to teach at Benson School for five years and then Fremont Junior High for 25 years. While a teacher he also coached football and track. On summer breaks he would drive truck and when he retired from the school system in 1990 he began the adventure of driving truck full time. Jim loved the outdoors, spending time up the North Umpqua camping, hunting deer and elk, and enjoying the woods. He was a member of the local Elks and Moose Lodges. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Deborah Ivie. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue; son Jim (Trina) of Roseburg; two grandson Danny (M’liss) of Roseburg and Travis of Florida; two great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Sage as well as a son-in-law Steve Ivie of Salem. Private family service will be held. Jim will be laid to rest at the Philiterian #8 IOOF Cemetery in Roseburg.
